Wet, Damp Basements Need Waterproofing That Works - Image 1

Has your basement been a source of frustration ever since you moved into your house? If the pond or nearby marshlands overflowing during the rainstorms has hit your last nerve, it's time to consider how to reverse the basement flooding curse.

It's easier than you'd think. All you have to do is understand the difference between an external and internal drainage system.

Here are some tips to help ease the stress of making a decision about waterproofing your wet basement.

Haven't I Already Had it Waterproofed Once Before?

Have you ever heard the story-- "Once upon a time my basement was waterproofed until my basement got wet."

Not very helpful, huh? Well, if your basement's waterproofing system doesn't hold up under pressure it might be time to invest in a new system. But, if you're wondering why the waterproofing didn't work we just might have the answer.

The External Waterproofing System

Sometimes basement contractors utilize an external waterproofing system that includes a tar or waterproof coating on top of the actual foundation. In addition the contractor will take a vast amount of time to install the underground drainage system.

The contractor will have to dig up your landscaping and carefully avoid damaging any plumbing or electrical lines. Even more digging is necessary for the well where the drainage pipe leads.

Unfortunately, once the system is in place, the soil is loose and absorbs large amounts of water, which then creates severe amounts of hydrostatic pressure against the basement walls. Hydrostatic pressure is the amount of pressure being exerted by standing water. Hydro means water and static means standing.

In addition, cracking and splitting could occur and thus the water pushes against the walls and enters your basement.

So, what may have seemed like a solution has all of a sudden become a problem in and of itself.

The Internal Waterproofing System

Now, the internal drainage system doesn't try to resolve your problems by waterproofing a wall or encouraging hydrostatic pressure and water buildup. Instead, this system prevents water from building up behind the walls thus reducing the hydrostatic pressure and stopping water from entering into your basement. The system traces around your entire basement so there's no water buildup, no hydrostatic pressure, no cracks, and no buckling walls.

The actual system is designed to meet the water at its main entrance point-- the wall-floor joint. In doing so, the water is pushed away from the foundation and basement and diverted to the sump pump and outside your home.

Another advantage, besides actually working, is that the internal drainage system only takes at most two days to install, it won't clog.
