Bowing Wall Repair in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia
Challenge
A homeowner in Berkeley Springs contacted Fortress Foundation Solutions after noticing visible movement along one of their basement foundation walls. What began as thin horizontal cracks across the concrete block wall had slowly progressed into noticeable inward bowing. The homeowner also observed that the wall appeared to be separating slightly from the basement floor, and shelving mounted to the wall no longer sat level.
The home was surrounded by moisture-retaining soil that became heavily saturated during periods of rainfall. As the soil absorbed water, it expanded and placed increasing lateral pressure on the foundation walls. During drier conditions, the soil contracted slightly, but the repeated expansion-and-contraction cycles caused progressive structural stress. Over time, this constant pressure forced the wall inward, increasing the risk of cracking, water intrusion, and potential structural failure.
Concerned about the long-term safety of their home, the homeowner wanted a permanent stabilization solution that would stop wall movement without requiring major exterior excavation or complete foundation replacement.
Solution
Fortress Foundation Solutions installed the PowerBrace™ Wall Repair System to stabilize the bowing foundation wall. Custom-fit, high-strength steel PowerBrace beams were installed vertically along the affected wall. Each beam was securely anchored to the basement floor and attached to the overhead floor framing, creating a rigid support structure designed to resist ongoing soil pressure.
Once installed, the PowerBrace system immediately halted further inward movement of the wall. The adjustable top brackets allow for periodic tightening over time, which can gradually encourage the wall back toward its original position. The homeowner gained peace of mind knowing their foundation wall was permanently stabilized with a durable, non-invasive solution.
