Bowing Wall Repair in Staunton, Virginia
Challenge
A homeowner in Staunton contacted Fortress Foundation Solutions after noticing horizontal cracks forming along one of their basement walls. Over time, the wall began showing slight inward movement, particularly along the midsection. While the bowing was not yet severe, the homeowner grew concerned after learning that horizontal cracking is often a sign of structural stress caused by outside soil pressure.
The issue became more noticeable following heavy rainfall, when the surrounding soil became saturated and expanded. Hydrostatic pressure was building against the foundation wall, gradually forcing it inward. Seasonal freeze-thaw cycles common in the area had also contributed to soil movement, increasing stress on the wall. Although the displacement was still minor, continued pressure could lead to worsening bowing and potentially costly structural damage if left untreated.
The homeowner wanted a permanent stabilization solution that would not require exterior excavation or bulky steel beams, as they hoped to eventually finish the basement space.
Solution
After a thorough inspection, Fortress Foundation Solutions recommended the installation of CarbonArmor®, a low-profile wall reinforcement system designed to permanently stabilize bowing foundation walls. CarbonArmor® utilizes high-strength carbon fiber-reinforced polymer strips that are bonded directly to the wall using a specially engineered epoxy resin.
During installation, the wall surface was carefully prepared to ensure maximum adhesion. Carbon fiber straps were then strategically applied along the cracked and bowed sections of the wall.
Once cured, the carbon fiber created a rigid bond that prevents any further inward movement. Despite its slim profile, CarbonArmor® is significantly stronger than steel in tensile strength, allowing it to effectively resist additional soil pressure.
The system immediately stabilized the wall without reducing usable basement space. Because of its low-profile design, the homeowner can now proceed with finishing the basement without obstruction. With CarbonArmor® in place, the foundation wall is permanently reinforced, providing long-term structural protection and renewed peace of mind.
